Before science explained the lunar eclipses, Islam taught us 1500 years ago that celestial events are signs of Allah.
Allah most high says,
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register, before We bring it into being, indeed that, for Allāh, is easy - [1634]
i.e., the Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ)
Surah Al-Hadid 57:22
Saheeh International
It was the year 2004, and I was only 19, newly married, carrying my first child, my daughter, in my womb. I still remember that evening so clearly. I was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables as quickly as I could. Dinner wasn’t a small affair; it was for fifteen people, and I felt the weight of that responsibility pressing on me. I wasn’t a pampered daughter back home. I worked, helped with chores, and did my part. But my mom never insisted I cook full meals. She never pushed me into that world, maybe saving me from it while she could.
And so, there I stood, a new bride, still learning, nervous about doing things “the right way.” Just then, my mother-in-law walked in. My heart skipped a beat.
She looked at me and asked, “What are you doing, my dear?”
I froze, my mind racing.
“Did I do something wrong, Mom?” I blurted out.
I thought maybe I was cutting the vegetables the wrong way, or perhaps I’d already made some mistake in the food. But her answer left me bewildered.
“Don’t you know there’s a lunar eclipse tonight? And here you are, holding a knife and cutting vegetables!”
Before I could respond, she rushed to take the knife from my hand, set it aside, and firmly instructed:
“Go straight to bed. Lie down flat, don’t move, and keep remembering Allah until the eclipse ends. Otherwise, it could harm the baby.”
I was startled. “But why, Mom?” I asked softly, confused and a little frightened.
She frowned and said with conviction:
“During an eclipse, a pregnant woman must never hold knives, scissors, or iron tools. If she does, the child may be born with a scar, a cut, or even a deformity.”
Those words sent shivers down my spine. This was my first child, my first experience of motherhood. I was terrified of anything that could harm my baby girl. So, without another word, I left the kitchen and lay down quietly on the bed, holding my breath, repeating Allah’s name. A part of me doubted the belief; it felt like superstition.
At that time, I stayed quiet, simply obeying what the elders said. Right then, my worry turned into a full panic attack. My heart was pounding, and I felt completely helpless. When you're pregnant, you feel everything more strongly, and I was so afraid this old story might be true.
I had no one to comfort me. So I turned to the only thing I could: prayer. I asked Allah to keep us safe. By His grace, Alhamdulillah (all praise to Allah), He blessed me with a beautiful, completely healthy baby girl.
But that's not the end of the story.
While the old superstition, like so many others, did not leave any physical mark on my daughter, my intense fear and anxiety did leave a mark on both me and her. The constant stress, crying, irritability, and sadness that emotional pain was very real, and it hurt my daughter. Although she is a strong girl and our source of strength مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ but she sometimes panics and becomes overwhelmed. We are trying to resolve this problem; we are working on it.
It's true: a healthy mom means a healthy baby. Health isn't just about the body; it's also about your mind and your heart.
During those months, I was really struggling. I fought constant anxiety. I would cry and then find peace in prayer. I read Surah Yusuf from the Quran over and over for comfort. That was years ago. Now, I want to use what I learned to help others.
So,
What was the one thing that finally made me believe and freed me from these scary superstitions?
Let go of myths (ancient, baseless thoughts)
Trust in Allah
Act on knowledge. (Read the Quran and hadith with interpretation (tafsir) and psychological research)
It will ease your panic and stress and help your children grow up mentally strong and healthy. Have mercy on yourself, and show mercy to your lovely kids, too
Islam Rejects Superstitions:
Abdullah b. ‘Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying.
Sahih Muslim
hadith number 5524 Book 26
Definitely,
How unaware we really are, even though Islam itself is like a vast university where everything can be learned with ease. The teachings of the Prophet ﷺ and his Sunnah clearly guide us, and they have already declared such practices to be mere superstitions, outdated customs, and baseless myths.
Where culture spread fear, the Prophet ﷺ spread light: Blood Lunar Eclipse in Islam:
The Prophet ﷺ himself clarified this during grief moment, during a deeply personal moment of his life. When His beloved young son Ibrahimرضی اللہ عنہ passed away, a solar eclipse occurred on the very same day. In that moment, whispers spread quickly just as they had in every culture before Islam. Among the Arabs, too, superstitions were deeply rooted: people would connect eclipses with births and deaths, they would rush to hide inside their homes, and pregnant women were often told not to move. Even iron objects were taken away from their hands out of fear that some “curse” might touch the unborn child.
Narrated Al-Mughira bin Shu`ba رضي الله عنه
The sun eclipsed in the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) on the day when (his son) Ibrahim رضي الله عنه passed away. So the people said that the sun had eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life (i.e., birth) of someone. When you see the eclipse, pray and invoke Allah."
Sahih al-Bukhari
hadith number 1043 Kitab al-Kusuf
What Causes a Blood Moon?
Science explains that a lunar eclipse happens when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon, and the sun’s red light passes through Earth’s atmosphere, making the moon appear red.
Three Tasks During An Eclipse(Solar or Lunar):
Eclipse Prayer(Slata al-Khusuf/Salat al-Kusuf)
Seek Forgiveness
أسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ رَبي مِنْ كُلِ ذَنبٍ وَأتُوبُ إلَيهِ
I seek forgiveness of my sins from Allah, my Lord, and I turn towards Him."
Give Charity
Dear Muslim sisters and brothers,
Islam teaches that an Eclipse is a sign of Allah’s power, not a bad omen.
whether it is a full lunar eclipse or a “blood moon,” it is a time to remember Allah, not to fear or fall into superstitions.
