Surah Kausar: Stress Relief from Mockery and Trauma

Updated: Jan 21

Just yesterday, a sudden wave of stress hit me, and no matter what I tried, it wouldn’t ease.

In that quiet moment, the word "Kausar", meaning abundance, came to mind, reminding me of Surah Kausar’s three beautiful verses, a timeless source of comfort for the Prophet ﷺ when he faced mockery and hardship.

As I paused and reflected, a gentle calm settled in, like drifting along a serene river, easing the tension, worry, and heaviness in my heart.

We all know Al-Kausar for its blessings and material rewards, but have you ever discovered its hidden divine treasure, one that goes far beyond worldly gains?

Why was Surah Kausar revealed?

In this reflection, we’ll uncover Surah Kausar’s spiritual and psychological wisdom as a powerful source of healing, showing how this divine gift can transform stress and trauma into patience, strengthen faith, and restore lasting inner calm.

Before we continue, here is the story behind the Revelation of Surah Al-Kausar (Chapter 108)

Quraish Mockery Toward Prophet Muhammad ﷺ: The Story of Surah Kausar

In pre-Islamic Arabia, families placed immense pride in sons, often overlooking daughters. Only male offspring were thought capable of continuing a lineage, while girls were disregarded, oppressed, and denied honor or recognition.

Sons were seen as the ultimate source of strength, family prestige, and legacy.

When Prophet Muhammad ﷺ announced his prophethood, he conveyed a message of dignity, respect, and equality for women, challenging these longstanding misconceptions.

Yet, hardships arrived. Losing a child is a profound sorrow, and for the Prophet ﷺ, this was a divine test when his beloved son Qasim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away.

At this emotionally delicate moment, the cruel and influential leaders of the Quraish tribe, including Abu Lahab, ‘Abqah ibn Mu‘ayt, and ‘Ab ibn Wa’il, seized the opportunity to ridicule him mercilessly.

They uttered harsh, venomous words:

  • “Muhammad ﷺ has lost his lineage.”

  • “Speak not of Muhammad ﷺ; his roots are cut.”

  • “He has no male children; his daughters are weak. What will they achieve?”

  • “His shoulders are weak. Who will carry his name?”

Their aim was clear: to shake his faith, break his spirit, and inflict deep emotional and spiritual pain. Even the strongest personality, our Prophet ﷺ, faced this weighty trial.

Surah Kausar 3 Verses: A divine reply to Cruelty & Mockery

Verse 1: Allah’s Abundance: Spiritual and material Blessings

1. اِنَّاۤ اَعْطَیْنٰكَ الْكَوْثَرَ
“Indeed, we have granted you Al-Kausar [abundance] and countless blessings.”

  • Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ countless blessings, both spiritual and material.

  • Spiritual excellence: Prophethood, wisdom, guidance.

  • Honors and virtues: Beauty of character, status above all creation.

  • Future legacy: Abundance of followers and victories.

  • Emphasizes that divine blessings are gifts from Allah, highlighting the eternal favor upon the Prophet ﷺ.

Verse 2: Devotion and Gratitude

2. فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَ انْحَرْ
“So, pray to your Lord and sacrifice [for Him alone.”
  • Commands the Prophet ﷺ to offer prayer and sacrifice in gratitude to Allah.

  • Symbolizes spiritual devotion, recognition of divine blessings, and humility.

  • Scholars interpret this to include daily prayers, Eid sacrifices, and acts of worship.

  • Reminds believers that all honor and abundance come from Allah, and true devotion is expressed through gratitude and worship.

Verse 3: Fate of the Prophet ﷺ’s Enemies

3. اِنَّ شَانِئَكَ هُوَ الْاَبْتَرُ
“Indeed, your enemy is cut off from all good.”

  • Allah decisively responds to the mockery of the Quraysh, who called the Prophet ﷺ “Abtar” (cut off).

  • The Prophet ﷺ’s lineage continues eternally through his beloved and respected daughter, Fatimah al-Zahra (may Allah be pleased with her), exemplifying divine justice, mercy, and the enduring legacy of his family.

  • Those who boasted about their sons’ lineage, such as Amr ibn al-ʿĀṣ(May Allah be pleased with him) and Hisham ibn Ab ibn Wa’il (May Allah be pleased with him), were spiritually and morally deprived.

  • Even though Amr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (RA) later became a skilled military commander, famously leading the Muslim conquest of Egypt, his family’s pride in lineage could not grant them the Prophet ﷺ’s spiritual legacy, which depends on faith and integrity.

  • Even if they appear to have offspring, their names remain insignificant; their mockery leaves only a lasting stigma of disgrace.

  • On the Day of Judgment, these enemies will face complete recompense for their disrespect and cruelty.

Modern psychology confirms what this Surah already teaches: stress and trauma trigger the body’s fight-or-flight response, making hearts heavy and minds restless.

Recent research shows that spirituality and faith-based coping strengthen emotional resilience. Believers who practice patience, gratitude, and trust in Allah experience less stress, more peace, a better mood, stronger relationships, and greater life satisfaction.
