Evil eyes are often misunderstood. Some come from a spiritual disease of the heart, but even loved ones or someone not physically present can still influence you.
This blog explains the difference between good and bad gazes in Islam and Ruqyah.

Difference Between Loving and Envious Gazes
Now, let’s understand the difference between Affection and malice in the harmful stare.
1. A Good Person’s Gaze: Al- A 'in (The Giver of Evil Eye)
A kind or loving look can sometimes “go off balance” and affect someone without bad intention.
This can occur with parents or loved ones, too.
Even loving admiration can have an unseen impact.
Good Gaze Example from the Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ
Even simple admiration (a “good gaze”) can unintentionally affect a person.
Narrated by Sahl ibn Hunayf (RA):
Amir ibn Rabiah (RA) saw Sahl (RA) while he was bathing and admired his appearance. He said:
“I have never seen skin like this, not even that of a virgin.”
Soon after, Sahl (RA) fell ill from the evil eye.
When the matter was mentioned to the Prophet ﷺ, he said:
“Why would one of you kill his brother? Why did you not say: Masha Allah, La quwwata illa billah?”
He ﷺ then instructed that water be poured over him for healing.
2: An Envious Person’s Gaze
What defines it?
It is actually a type of detrimental illness, but it does not involve a desire for someone’s blessings to be taken away.
Example: The Incident of the Evil Eye in the Quran (Surah Al-Qalam 51–52)
In Arabia, certain people were known for possessing a powerful “evil eye.” They believed that if they looked at something with the intention to harm it, it could be affected or even destroyed, and they claimed to have witnessed such incidents on multiple occasions.
When the disbelievers of Makkah heard about them, they approached these individuals and said:
“Cast your evil eye upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
So, they looked intensely at the Prophet ﷺ and remarked:
“We have never seen a man like him, nor have we seen signs as clear as his.”
They were known for harming others through looks filled with envy or intense astonishment.
However, all their efforts, like their other plots and conspiracies, failed.
Allah Almighty protected His beloved Prophet ﷺ from their harm, and it is mentioned that these verses were revealed in relation to this incident.
(Khazin Madarik, Surah Al-Qalam, verses 51–52, pp. 1271–1272)
How the Evil Eye Works (According to Scholars)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (RA) explained it beautifully:
“The evil eye is like an arrow that comes from the soul of the one who casts it (the ‘Ain) and hits the person being looked at (the Ma‘in).
If the target is protected by strong faith and remembrance of Allah, the arrow has no effect. But if the person is spiritually exposed, it penetrates and causes harm.”
(Zad al-Ma‘ad, Ibn al-Qayyim)
The Science of Evil Eye
Experts say every human eye emits invisible waves carrying an emotional aura.
These waves enter the body and can either benefit or harm it.
Positive energy brings balance and supports overall health.
Negative forces, especially from an envious gaze, can disrupt the body’s system.
When a person with a bad gaze looks at a beautiful face, their invisible influence can affect the other person. This can increase melanin in the blood, causing the skin to darken.

Protecting Yourself from the Evil Eye
Quran says:
قُلْ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا۟ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ
“Tell the believing men to lower some of their gazes.”
(Surah An-Nur 24:30)
Kanz-ul-Iman

✔️It is through the eyes that temptation spreads, but you’ll be surprised that the evil eye doesn’t require seeing someone.
✔️Even a blind person, or someone who merely hears about another’s success or happiness, can cast it.
✔️When envy or ill intent stirs in the heart, the malicious glance takes effect.
Islamic Reminder: Say Masha Allah, La quwwata illa billah
Whenever you look at someone, whether with love or envy, quickly say “Barak Allah fi” (May Allah bless you)
or “Masha Allah, La quwwata illa billah.” (What Allah has willed has happened; there is no power except with Allah).
The Prophet’s Dua for Children
The Prophet’s Dua for Hasan and Husain (may Allah be pleased with them) Against the Evil Eye
Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) reported:
The Prophet ﷺ used to seek protection for Hasan and Husain by saying:
أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللّٰهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ
A‘ūdhu bi kalimātillāhi at-tāmmati min kulli shayṭānin wa hāmmatin, wa min kulli ‘aynin lāmmatin
“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and poisonous thing, and from every evil eye that harms. "He added, “Your father (Ibrahim AS) used to seek protection with these same words for Ismail and Ishaq AS.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3371)
Ruqyah process in Islam
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When afflicted by the evil eye, recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Naas and blow (for protection).”
Ruqyah Using Surah Al-Qalam (68:51–52)
Wa in yakadu alladhina kafaroo layuzliqoona bialsaraahim lammaa samiAAoo alththikra wayaqooloona innahu lamajnoon.
"Indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the Qur’an, and they say, ‘Indeed, he is mad."
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5738)

Best Remedy for Evil Eye: Glass of Water Silva Method

The Glass of Water Silva Method is a simple, gentle, and time-tested practice that helps clear toxic vibrations and protect against a cursed look.
Developed by Jose Silva, it uses water’s natural ability to absorb harmful energy from the black soul (Silva, 1990).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Take clean water in a glass cup (glass preferred over metal or plastic).
With full focus and faith, the following:
Surah Al-Fatiha – 7 times
Start and end the recitation with Durood Shareef (salawat on the Prophet ﷺ).
After reciting, lightly blow on the affected person and gently move the glass around him seven times.
Quick Tips for Effective Protection
Surah Blow on the person: not the water.
Dispose safely: Pour the water into the toilet, away from clean areas or gardens.
Cure for Evil Eye: Scientific Perspective
The evil eye is a psychological phenomenon, with effects caused by envy, stress, and suggestion. Practices that redirect attention or calm the mind can reduce its impact (Hall, 2007).
