Can a Lunar Eclipse Harm Pregnancy? -My Fear and the Truth

Phases of a blood lunar eclipse captured in a stunning sequence, showcasing the moon's transition from full shadow to its vivid red hue and back again.

We often think we are following religion when, in reality, we are only repeating inherited fears passed down for generations without ever questioning them.

That night, blood-moon eclipse predictions had already planted a quiet panic deep in my heart.

I never imagined that one warning about a cosmic event would leave me carrying silent terror more heavily than my own pregnancy.

A Young Pregnant Bride in 2004

A pregnant woman viewing a lunar eclipse in the sky at night.

It was the year 2004, and I was only 19, newly married, carrying my first child, my daughter, in my womb. I still remember that evening so clearly.

The Burden of Marriage: Emotional Stress

I was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables as quickly as I could. Dinner wasn’t a small task; it was for fifteen people, and I felt the weight of that responsibility pressing on me.

When My Mother-in-Law Walked In With an Old Lunar Eclipse Myth

Just then, my mother-in-law stepped in.

She looked at me and asked,

“Why are you here right now?”

I froze, my mind racing.

“Did I do something wrong, Mom?” I blurted out.

She looked shocked.

“Don’t you know there’s a lunar eclipse tonight? And here you are, holding a knife and cutting vegetables!”

Before I could respond, she quickly took the knife from my hand and firmly instructed:

  • Lie flat on the bed

  • Don’t move until the eclipse ends.

  • During an eclipse, a pregnant woman must never hold knives, scissors, or iron tools.

  • Otherwise, the baby could be born with a scar, a cut, or even a deformity.

Those words sent shivers down my spine.

Pregnancy Anxiety Due to False Beliefs

False belief linking blood moon eclipse with mental or physical illness in unborn babies.

It’s true: a healthy mother means a healthy baby. Health is not only physical; mental wellness matters too.

.

During those months, I still remember the heaviness in my heart. My in-laws deeply believed in omens, but I could never truly accept them.

I would cry quietly, then find solace in prayer and reading the Surah Yusuf.

Today, I shared this story so others can understand that some cultural beliefs are not what Islam truly teaches.

The Eclipse in Islam: Clarified by the Hadith

When the sun, moon, and earth align in a specific order set by Allah, causing their light to become partially or completely hidden, it is called an eclipse.

In Islam, it is a natural phenomenon that invites people to reflect deeply, remember Allah, and develop awe and consciousness of Him.

In Arab Culture: The Fear of Solar Eclipses

Before Islam, celestial events such as solar and lunar darkening were shrouded in intense dread.

Among the Arabs, such phenomena were often linked to death, disaster, or the passing of influential figures.

The Prophet ﷺ and the Truth About Eclipses

When a solar eclipse occurred during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ on the day his son Ibrahim رضي الله عنه passed away, people linked it to his death.

But the Prophet ﷺ clearly corrected this belief:

“The sun and the moon do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. When you see the eclipse, pray and invoke Allah.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 1043, Kitab al-Kusuf)

Divine Signs in Creation: The Sun and the Moon

The sun and the moon are not symbols of harm or automated bad luck. They are among the signs of Allah’s power and mercy.

And among His signs are the night and the day and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun or the moon, but prostrate to Allah Who created them, if you truly worship Him.

(Surah Fussilat 41:37)

What Muslims Should Do During an Eclipse

Muslim woman praying, making dua, and reciting the Quran during a lunar eclipse.

This prophetic education finally freed me from harmful traditions and phobias, and this is what I chose to follow:

  • Complete Trust in Allah during fear

  • Act on authentic knowledge

  • Offer the special prayer known as

Salat al-Kusoof (for a solar eclipse)

Salat al-Khusuf (for a lunar eclipse)

  • Seek forgiveness

  • Give charity

  • Believe whatever is written in destiny will happen.

Research also shows that reducing stress and focusing on acceptance helps improve mental well-being (Dunkel Schetter & Tanner, 2012).

Lunar Eclipse: A Spiritual Reminder for Every Mother

When stress overwhelms us, Allah promises,

وَمَنْ يَّتَوَكَّلْ عَلَي اللّٰهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهٗ ۭ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بَالِغُ اَمْرِهٖ
And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He alone is sufficient for them.

Surah At-Talaq (Kanzul Iman)

(65:3)

And if this story touched your heart, share it with another mother, daughter, or newly married woman who may still be quietly carrying these fears inside her heart. Sometimes one story can bring someone back to peace.
